For a long time there has been a restriction in therapeutic options for infants due to a limited range of pediatric formulations on the market. The doses, dose forms and flavors of many commercially available medications are often designed for adults and unsuitable for these sometimes challenging young patients. In order to increase compliance, improve therapeutic outcomes and make it easier for parents to administer the medication to their children we can can help.
Altered Dose Forms
The dose form of the medication used can be tailored to suite the infants requirements. Rather than being restricted to tablets that were designed for adults and hard for children to take we can prepare a number of alternatives:
(1) Specially Flavored Mixtures/Suspension.
(2) Lollipops
(3) Oral Effervescent Powders
Effervescent delivery sachets are a popular and innovative way to approach dosing challenges, for example, large powder loads of multiple ingredients with varying densities. This dosage form is ideal for customized nutraceutical products including vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements and amino acids as well as pharmaceutical treatments such as anti-nausea, antacids, analgesics, antihistamines, antipyretics, antibiotics and sleep aids. These can be flavored so children think it is a fizzy drink treat so they will want to take their medicine.
(4) Rapid Dissolving Tablets (RDT’s)
Rapid Dissolve Tablets are designed to dissolve quickly on the tongue without any water making it an ideal alternative dosage form for patients who have difficulty swallowing. In short, they offer quick delivery of medication, rapid dissolution, and greater absorption in the blood.
(5) Suppositories
Altered Dosages
Rather than being restricted to doses often designed for adults the strength of each dose can be tailor made for the infant in order to minimize any side effects.
Flavors
And finally a wide variety of palatable flavors are available to mask the taste of the medication to suite the most finicky pallet. Flavors such as chocolate, raspberry, vanilla and bubblegum are available. This helps improve compliance and makes the parents job a little easier.
Formulations
Many of the formulations used in our laboratory for pediatric patients come from The Pediatric Drug Formulations Text, which contains over 280 formulations for infants and children commonly used around the world. It includes ophthalmic, rectal, oral and injectable products. This text was developed by The Ohio State University Children’s Hospital. In addition to the formulations it also cites very valuable stability data for these preparations often which is very difficult to obtain. The wealth of information provided by this text ensures that a reliable, tested and stable preparation can be produced for the benefit of all pediatric patients.
Typical ingredients available include:
Omeprazole
